We’ve done a number of comparisons in the past when it comes to the latest flagship devices. We did a detailed comparison of the iPhone 5S, Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, as well as a few others. The smartphone industry has become a little competitive, and consumers have a lot of choices, even when it comes to high-end devices. Every manufacturer has released their flagship device with top-of-the-line specifications, but there are other things to consider apart from just internal when it comes to smartphones.
There’s no perfect smartphone, and it depends on personal preferences as well. If you’ve shortlisted Samsung Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5S to be the top contenders, we’ll suggest you go for iPhone 5S, unless you’re a die hard Android fan. Why? Here are some of the reasons why we’ll prefer iPhone 5S over Samsung Galaxy S5.
1. iPhone 5S is Less Bloated
Apple iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7.0 as its operating system, which is upgradeable to iOS 7.1.1. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S5 features Andorid 4.4.2 KitKat with TouchWiz UI on top of it — or should I say bloatware. Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with top of the line specifications, but I find Samsung’s TouchWiz UI to be too bloated and customized compared to stock Android. I’ve used iPhone and Samsung as my primary devices, and iOS is without a doubt a better performer. I find Samsung’s customizations to be a little too high, and there’s no doubt they have reduced it a little bit in the Samsung Galaxy S5.
2. One Hand Use

Apple iPhone 5S comes with a 4-inch Retina display, while the Samsung Galaxy S5 ocmes with a 5.1-inch display. There’s no doubt the Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy S5 is very good, but it seems to be a little too big for one hand use. One the other hand, you can easily use the iPhone on the go, and perform most of the tasks with just one hand. Although the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a tad bigger than the Galaxy S4, but if you compare it with it, you’ll find noticeable difference between both devices, hindering the one hand use on the device.
3. Touch ID is better

Yes, many might disagree but, its the truth. The Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 5S is much better than the swipe sensor found inside the Galaxy S5. The fingerprint sensor found inside the Galaxy S5 works a little differently compared to the iPhone 5S. For iPhone 5S, you just have to place your finger on the home button, and let it handle the rest. As in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S5, its a swipe sensor, meaning that you have to swipe your finger over the home button. As a result, it may not be as accurate, and you may have to try multiple times for it to work.
4. App Store Has Better Apps, Well, Yes to Some Extent
This is a debatable topic. Both app stores have over a million apps, but how many of them are quality ones? That’s a little difficult to answer. It’s believed that iOS App Store has more high quality apps when compared to Google Play Store. According to the report from uTest, it seems the Android apps are being reviewed higher, making it come on par with the iOS app store. However, it also comes down to personal preference in my opinion.
5. Software updates
This is one thing which you will definitely miss if you go for the Samsung Galaxy S5. When Apple releases a new OS, it’s pushed to all iOS devices at the same time, so that all iOS users can enjoy and make use of the latest features. However, for Android, the situation is a little different. The latest software update released by Google to OEMs has to go through several phases.
They are first sent to OEMs, then they customize it accordingly, and in carrier locked regions, they are further sent to the carriers for their own tweaks, so it takes a pretty long time. We are using a Samsung Galaxy S5 (GT-I9500) which received the latest KitKat update in early April, making it almost 5 months late. This plays an important role, at least for me, when I choose to purchase my new device.
The case is different for Nexus and Google Play Edition devices. They are the first ones to get the latest Android updates, which usually takes a few weeks after Google announces a new software version.
6. Camera
Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 16MP camera with 4K video recording, while iPhone 5S features a 8MP iSight camera. There’s no denying the end result of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is better, and it supports 4K recording which may not be that big of a deal, at least for now. However, I find the camera on the iPhone 5S much easier to use, with varied options.
Wrap up
This might help users make up their mind. Google has taken quite a few steps to make sure Android is more secure and user friendly. In the end, it also comes down to personal preference as well. Both devices are great performers, but you may want to look at some of the factors above before making your decision. Apart from the features, it’s also the number of apps, basically, the apps which can help the users get things done.
