Hey, remember the iPod Touch? No? Hard to blame you. Apple’s “iPhone without the phone part” hasn’t exactly been one of their focuses as the company has found selling tablets and improving the iPhone to be far more rewarding. But it did finally remember it sells these things, and gave them a slight update.
What’s New?
Mostly, Apple just added a few basic features the iPod Touch was missing. The biggest addition is the 5MP camera on the back of the case. Yes, until now, the iPod Touch did not actually have a camera on the back. Needless to say, people are pretty excited about this. Oh, and it also now comes in colors.
Also, Apple cut the price. The 16GB version now costs just $200, while the 32GB will run you $250 and the 64GB is now $300. But that does raise an important question: Is this actually worth it?
What’s Old
Under the hood, honestly, not much has changed. The iPod Touch is still running an A5, Apple’s processor from three years ago. The RAM hasn’t been upgraded. In fact, buying this now might be something you regret in the near future: While the latest version of the Touch can, amazingly, run iOS 8, if you’re on an A5 it’s probably going to chug like an engine going up a mountain. iOS 9 is likely a year or two away, but it’s unlikely to work on the Touch.
A Disposable Smart Device
On the other hand, if you need a relatively smart device to give to a preteen, or you’re looking for a basic companion on a trip that you won’t be heartbroken if it breaks, this might actually be your best option. You can take photos, use apps, and not worry about having it get stolen or broken. Of course, if you’re dropping $200 on a “disposable” smart device, perhaps consider an insurance plan.
